Flight: Goyder Lagoon Channel Country & Simpson Desert

This flight focusses on the exquisitely green floodplains fed by the mighty Diamantina River, known as the Goyder Lagoon. This year, thanks to the vast flooding rains ex-cyclone Kirrily brought to the area, the Goyder Lagoon has come alive with thousands of finger-like channels filling for hundreds of kilometres and acting as an oasis for various wildlife including camels and cattle from surrounding cattle stations. The lagoon and channels attract an array of birdlife and supply an abundance of fish to aid their seasonal nesting. The unique contrast of this amazing channel country against the backdrops of the Simpson and Sturt Stony Deserts is a visual feast only able to be enjoyed from the air.

Flight Route Details

Departing Birdsville we track west over Adria Downs Station to the famous Big Red sand dune situated at the gateway to the Simpson Desert. Overhead the QAA line we turn south and cross the state border while flying abeam the Eyre Creek to Alton Downs Station. From here we enter the breathtaking green floodplains of the Goyder Lagoon, a vast area of seemingly endless microchannels brimmed with Diamantina floodwater which is an oasis for the abundance of migratory birds that flock to the region in a wet year.

We soar above this exquisite landscape and marvel at the contrast of the vibrant green against the red backdrop provided by the Sturt Stony Desert as we approach Clifton Hills Station. We continue to meander past some of the many freshly filled waterholes and take up the main channel of the mighty Diamantina River following it back towards Birdsville past Pandie Pandie Station Homestead.

On our way back into Birdsville we overfly the famous Birdsville Racecourse before circling the township on our approach to land.
