The Eyre Creek and Georgina River catchment is experiencing a major flood in early 2026 due to the huge rainfall totals in their respective systems. The Mount Isa region experienced record-breaking rainfall in February and all this water will eventually find its way all the way into Lake Eyre.
The passing floodwater will also exquisitely rejuvenate the channel country of the Eyre Creek and Lake Machattie wetland area as it recedes. These flooding events naturally draw an abundance of birdlife to the area with large populations of pelicans nesting and feeding on the banks of the full lake system and in the thousands of fibrous flooded channels.
This is a true spectacle to witness from the air on our Eyre Creek & Lake Machattie scenic flight.
